Srinagar, June 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra has appointed retired IPS officer K Vijay Kumar as one of his two advisers after the state was placed under Governor’s rule on Wednesday. Reportedly, under the then IPS officer Kumar's leadership (now retired), the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu successfully initiated the 'Operation Cocoon', which led to the assassination of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan.

Kumar, who is expert in conducting anti-naxals operations, has been appointed as the adviser for Jammu and Kashmir for same reasons, cited the officials.

Vijay Kumar, a 1975 batch IPS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre earlier served as Inspector General of BSF in 1998-2001 in Kashmir valley. During this period, the border security force was actively involved with the counter-militancy operations in the state. After that, he was posted in the special task force of Tamil Nadu to carry the Operation Cocoon --killing Veerappan in the year 2004.

The second advisor is the Chhattisgarh cadre IAS officer BVR Subrahmanyam, appointed as the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir by NN Vohra. The appointments have been made, a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out its support from the coalition partner -- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) citing national interest and deteriorating law and order situation in the state. After the support was withdrawn, President Ram Nath Kovind declared Governor’s rule in J&K.
