Srinagar, Aug 29: Four personnel of Jammu and Kashmir police were shot dead by an unspecified number of terrorists in Arahama area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on Wednesday. Terrorists fired on cops when they were repairing their vehicle in the Bongam village. Four personal security officers lost their lives in the attack.
While two cops died on the spot, two sccumbed to injuries in a hospital. The slain policemen have been identified as constables Ishfaq Ahmad Mir, Javed Ahmad Bhat, Mohammad Iqbal Mir and SPO Adil Manzoor Bhat. The area was cordoned off following the attack, and a manhunt was launched to arrest the attackers.
The terrorists fled with three weapons after attacking cops. The martyred cops were attached to a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Shopian. The Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit took joint responsibility along with the Hizbul Mujahideen for the attack in Shopian. A caller identifying himself as a spokesman for JeM called a news agency GNS in Srinagar claiming responsibility for the attack.
The spokesman said four policemen were killed in the attack and three weapons of the slain policemen were taken away by the assailants. He said the attack was carried out jointly by JeM and the Hizbul Mujahideen.
