Kolkata, August 12: A harrowing incident came to light when the semi-nude body of a female trainee doctor was found in RG Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Several reports say that the second-year trainee was murdered after being raped. The Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy on Saturday, August 10. He was charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS and was presented in Sealdah court, which remanded him to police custody until August 23. The initial autopsy report revealed that the victim had bleeding from both eyes and mouth, as well as injuries on her face, nails, belly, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips. Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the Kolkata rape-murder case, is a civic volunteer, and reportedly, he has been married four times, with three of his previous wives leaving him due to his "misconduct." Neighbours reported that the accused frequently came home late at night while intoxicated. Roy became a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group in 2019 but later transferred to the Kolkata Police’s Welfare Cell through the proper channels. According to reports, Roy leveraged “connections” to secure accommodation at the Kolkata Police’s 4th Battalion. This advantage enabled him to be posted at RG Kar Hospital repeatedly, sometimes for long stretches, allowing him unrestricted access to various hospital departments.
What Led to His Arrest?
Sanjay Roy was identified through a torn earphone found in the seminar room where the young doctor's body was discovered. Additionally, CCTV footage showed Roy entering the building with a Bluetooth device around his neck at 4 a.m. The earphone was missing when he left 40 minutes later. The device was later linked to his cellphone.
