New Delhi, August 2: A few years ago, the Indian government introduced High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) to address identification issues with vehicle number plates. To improve transparency and consistency, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) amended the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, in 2005, mandating the use of HSRP. These plates feature advanced security elements, such as a 3D hologram and laser-etched serial numbers, designed to prevent tampering and enhance vehicle identification. Let's know what HSRP is. Is it mandatory? How to Obtain it

Before this, vehicle owners could choose customised number plates in various colours, fonts, and languages, which made them difficult to standardise and track. The shift to HSRP number plates is designed to boost vehicle security and simplify identification throughout India. Cyberfraud in Bengaluru: Man Trying To Book HSRP Number Plate Duped of INR 96,000.

What Is HSRP?

HSRP, or High-Security Registration Plates, is a standard set by the Indian government for vehicle registration plates. It features security elements like an international registration code, a unique laser-etched serial number, and a 3D hologram of the Ashok Chakra. These plates are easily recognisable by police and are nearly impossible to tamper with. All HSRP number plates issued by various RTO offices have uniform font sizes and dimensions. Additionally, these high-security plates are electronically linked to the vehicles, making reuse impossible. CJI DY Chandrachud's Mercedes E-Class Creates Social Media Buzz for Its Unique Number Plate (See Pic).

Is It Mandatory To Have an HSRP?

According to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) regulations, all vehicles, both old and new, are required to have an HSRP number plate. HSRP compliance is automatic for vehicle owners who bought their vehicles after July 2022. However, obtaining HSRPs is mandatory for those who purchased vehicles between April 1, 2019, and July 2022. If a vehicle owner does not have an HSRP installed, they may be fined between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 10,000.

How To Obtain HSRP?

Vehicle owners can obtain their HSRP by applying through the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) website (www.siam.in/hrspsubmit.aspx). You must provide essential vehicle details, such as registration information, specific vehicle, chassis, and engine numbers. Additionally, you'll require a mobile number for OTP verification, an email ID, and either a UPI ID or a credit or debit card for online payment.

If online booking is not working or possible, alternative options include visiting an authorised showroom or the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to complete the process.
