Ballia, March 30: A 26-year-old Muslim woman today alleged that her husband had given her divorce over phone. The woman, living under the Bariya police station limits, told the media that her husband, who is serving in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and posted in Bagdogra (West Bengal), had given her divorce by uttering "talaq" thrice over phone.

"He called me up recently, said he wanted to marry another girl and gave me divorce by saying talaq thrice," the woman told mediapersons here.

She said she had got married on April 12, 2016 and alleged that during the time she spent with her in-laws, she was harassed for a car and Rs 10 lakh in dowry.

She also shared her wedding photographs with the media. The father of the woman said giving divorce on phone was unacceptable and that he would do the needful to get justice for her daughter. He added that they had approached the police with a complaint in this regard, but the latter refused to lodge a case.

In August last year, the Supreme Court had struck down the practice of instant triple talaq -- talaq-e-biddat -- as unconstitutional.
