Lakhimpur Kheri, May 29: At least four people have been killed after the pillar of a mosque collapsed in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Tuesday. According to a tweet by ANI, the mosque collapsed due to strong winds and heavy rains.
Reports inform that about 5 people have been injured so far. The southwest monsoon on Tuesday hit Kerala, three days before its scheduled arrival, says the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

"Today, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of southeast Arabian Sea, Comorin – Maldives area, entire Lakshadweep, most parts of Kerala, some parts of Tamil Nadu and some more parts of southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal. Thus the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala, 3 days ahead of its normal date," the IMD informed in a press release.
At least 40 people were killed due to thunderstorm which struck ports of northern India on Monday. The states that were worst affected include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. These northern states were ravaged by the gutsy winds, combined with rainfall, lightning and thunderstorm which struck last night due to which normal life was thrown out of gear.
As per reports, maximum fatalities were reported from Bihar. The death toll in Bihar was 17 while in Uttar Pradesh, 10 were killed in lightning incidents across Barabanki, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar and Azamgarh, whereas, six others were left injured. Meanwhile in Jharkhand, at least 13 people were killed and about eight others had sustained injuries.
In southern India, heavy rainfall lashed the twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Mangaluru for the third day today, inundating low-lying areas and flooding roads, disrupting traffic and throwing life out of gear. The Home Ministry said it has reviewed the situation in Managalore and is rushing additional teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) to to assist the local administration in handling rescue and relief operations.
