Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal Blames Congress Over PNB Fraud, Says 'Started During Their Time'
The scam started in 2011 and was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies
New Delhi, March 5: Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday blamed Congress over Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case and said the matter of diamond merchant Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi is connected to the grand old party. Laying the blame on the Congress, Goyal stated that the Opposition party is trying to mislead the country. "Matter of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi is connected to Congress, the problem started during their time, they cannot mislead the nation on this issue," Goyal told media here.
To the unversed, the PNB detected a 1.77 billion dollar scam in which Modi acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking from one of its branches for overseas credit from other Indian lenders. Yesterday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested four more people in connection with the billion dollars PNB fraud case.
The investigation agency arrested an auditor and two employees of jeweller Nirav Modi's Group of Companies and a director of Gitanjali Group of Companies in the said case. The scam started in 2011 and was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies. Meanwhile, the PNB filed a second complaint with the CBI on February 13. The CBI had received the complaint from the PNB on January 28 and a case was registered in the case on January 31.
