Chandigarh, June 16: An Uber cab driver has been arrested for allegedly harassing a woman passenger in Chandigarh. According to a recent tweet by ANI, the incident took place on Friday. According to details by the Police, strict action will be taken against the driver for harassing the female passenger. “We have registered a complaint, we will take appropriate action against the driver after a thorough investigation”, the Police said.

According to a report by The Tribune, the victim’s family alleged that the accused driver has been identified as Jasmer Singh. Singh, a resident of Mohali district was reportedly sending messages to her on WhatsApp posing as a girl, named Jyoti. Reports inform that the accused started sending messages to the victim posing as a girl.

The victim was, however, unaware of the fact that the person sending her messages was a man and started chatting with the person for about a month.

Earlier this month, Police arrested a driver for allegedly molesting a woman in his taxi while she was returning from Delhi. Police produced the accused in the local court and sent him in judicial custody. In March, a 22-year-old Uber driver was arrested in Haryana for allegedly abducting and sexually harassing a woman after she boarded his cab.

In wake of rising crime incidents, Uber had asked its customers to stay alert and stick to some precautionary measures like checking the vehicle numbers and match the face of the driver tasked with picking them up. "Normally the riders do not check whether the driver mentioned on the app is same as the one who has come to pick up. In such cases, the rider can complain about our platform and we shall take an action," said an Uber official.
