Transgender Beaten By MNS Workers in Connection to Prostitution in Thane Attempted Suicide

A 23-year-old transgender, who was assaulted in Thane on Sunday by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers attempted suicide.

Mumbai, June 1: A 23-year-old transgender, who was assaulted in Thane on Sunday by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers attempted suicide. The victim was admitted to Rajawadi hospital on Tuesday night. According to a report published in Hindustan Times, the transgender attempted suicide by consuming some medicines and a cleaning agent. The videos of the assault went viral on social media. The Govandi resident got upset and depressed after watching photos and videos of the assault.

MNS workers on Sunday thrashed three transgenders for their alleged involvement in prostitution. The 23-year-old denied the charges. The transgender stated being a social worker attached to Akhil Kinnar Association, a group that represents transgenders and eunuchs. The victim told Hindustan Times, “I didn’t go there as a sex worker, I work as a social activist and had gone there to hand out condoms to those who work there.” The victim claimed the MNS workers attacked the transgenders as soon as they got down the auto.

The worker said that it was part of their job to supply condoms to sex workers. The 23-year-old further added that they visit Majiwada area, a major stop for trucks, twice a week. According to the hospital authorities, the transgender is in stable condition now and even counselling was done as a part of treatment.
