New Delhi, March 6: The Tibetan Government in exile has cancelled two events in Delhi to mark the 60th year of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama’s exile. As per reports, an inter-faith meeting at Rajghat had been cancelled and a rally to be attended by the Dalai Lama has been moved to Dharamshala.
The actual reason behind the sudden change in plan is not clear yet. However, it comes on the back of Indian government reportedly asking their senior leaders to refrain from attending the events to maintain ties with China. It is believed, that the stance taken by the Government has kept in mind the current volatile equation with China.
As per reports, the Ministry of External Affairs a few days back clarified that the government had advised central and state functionaries to avoid going to events organised by Tibetan leaders in India. The response stated "Government of India's position on His Holiness the Dalai Lama is clear and consistent. He is a revered religious leader and is deeply respected by the people of India. There is no change in that position. His Holiness is accorded all freedom to carry out his religious activities in India."
Reportedly, equations with China saw a downfall, after the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh in April last year. There are also reports that Beijing refers to Dalai Lama as “splittist” and a “dangerous separatist”.
