New Delhi, June 8: Activists in Telangana have decided to approach the high court seeking contempt proceedings against the state government over the alleged violation of judicial orders on the Iftar hosted by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on June 8. According to a report by TOI, about 66 crore is reportedly kept aside for this year’s Iftar.

The report further informs that the high court has asked for details of the beneficiaries of the Iftar hosted by the chief minister in 2017. The court has also asked a list of Iftar dinners hosted at select mosques across Telangana last year.

The social activists are of the opinion that the huge amount of money that is being embarked for hosting the Iftar party is drawn from the minorities welfare department. They argue that hosting such a lavish Iftar dinner celebration is not right on the part of the government. According to the TOI report, the activists have demanded that the money spent on such parties should be recovered as early as possible and should be spent on welfare schemes.

The report further informs that the court, however, has refused to entertain a fresh public interest litigation (PIL) seeking cancellation of Iftar that to be hosted by the chief minister, the activists have decided to seek contempt of court proceedings.

Social activist Lubna Sarwath was quoted by TOI saying that the high court orders of June 16, 2017 have been violated by the state government. She said contempt proceedings shall be initiated against the state government and appealed the religious leaders, politicians, bureaucrats, and citizens from all walks of life, to boycott the Iftar being hosted on June 8 this year by the CM.

It must be noted that the Chief Minister also holds the minority welfare ministry portfolio since 2014. The activist also informed that RTIs on the expenditure of KCR sending 'chadar' to Ajmer dargah, and Nazrana (cash gift) every year has not been replied to till date, she alleged.
