Swachh Survekshan 2018: West Bengal Home to 19 of 25 Dirtiest Cities in India; South Delhi Makes Strides

New Delhi, June 24: The Ministry of Urban Affairs on Saturday released the full list of city-wise rankings on cleanliness parameters. The rankings are based upon the survey conducted in 4203 urban local bodies between January to March. The survey finds West Bengal as home to 19 of the 25 dirtiest cities in India.
The list comprises of towns or cities with a minimum population of 1 lakh. The city placed at the bottom, which has fared the worst on all indicators - waste collection, open defecation, solid waste processing and disposal - is Gujarat's Bhadreshwar.
From West Bengal, the cities which have made the list are Darjeeling, Siliguri, Serampore, Madhyamgram, North Barrackpore, Bankura. Three cities each from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh also feature in the top 25 dirtiest cities of India.
The list of 500 dirtiest cities was unveiled on Saturday. Earlier, as part of the Swachh Survekshan 2018, the list of cleanest cities in India was also released. Indore ranked first, followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh. Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was ranked 29 -- up from the 32nd rank in 2017.
South Delhi Makes Strides
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), ruled by the BJP, made significant strides as its ranking has improved from 202 to 32.
SDMC commissioner Puneet Goel said the success was a direct result of the corporation "constructing 164 community toilets, 34 public toilets, mechanising collection and transportation of the garbage and using dry leaves for composting in 6,820 parks."
Meanwhile, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has improved its position from 279 to 206 in the Swachh rankings. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), whose working remains marred with workers' strikes, has deteriorated its position from 196 to 341 in the rankings.
