Supreme Court Clarifies Judgment, We Are Not Against The Act But Innocent Can't be Punished

New Delhi, April 3 The Supreme Court while hearing a plea on SC/ST Act observed, “We are not against the act and innocent should not be punished." India's apex court said that vested interests were also involved in the issue. The Supreme Court in support of its judgment has made a point that it is not the act but implementation of the act may cause a problem.India's apex court refuses to put stay on its March 20 order.

The apex court has also asked a question that why people wanted arrests without any verification. In its observation the Supreme Court also said that the act can be misused for political gains. On March 20, two-judge bench of the supreme court passed a judgment which diluted SC/ST Act (Prevention of Atrocities) by banning automatic arrest and laying stringent ‘Safeguards’ before registering a case.

According to Ministry of Home Affairs 47,000 cases were registered under SC/ST Act in 2016. There was a massive uproar by SC/ST community against this judgment. Bharat Bandh called by SC/ST community turned violence in which nine people killed and more than hundred people injured. Centre government filed a plea in the apex court to consider to reconsider the judgment. Next hearing on the plea  is scheduled after 10 days
