The Statue of Unity is a monument that is dedicated to Sardar Patel in the state of Gujarat. Facing the Narmada Dam, on a river island called Sadhu Bet, the World's Tallest Statue is built.
It is the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel today. A leader of the Indian National Congress, he was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. He played a very important role in the Indian freedom struggle with the Quit India Movement against the British regime. To commemorate his contributions, the Statue of Unity, a monument that is dedicated to Sardar Patel will be inaugurated in the state of Gujarat. Facing the Narmada Dam, on a river island called Sadhu Bet, the World's Tallest Statue is built. It is at a height of 182 metres (597 ft). It will be today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Know Some of the Facts About The Statue of Unity
- The statue will be spread across an area of 20,000 square meters. In the surrounding, there will be a 12 square kms artificial lake.
- There will be a 153m viewing gallery for the statue and it will accommodate up to 200 visitors.
- The statue is made using 22,500 metric ton of cement and can withstand a wind velocity of 60 m/sec, vibration and earthquake. It has bronze cladding all over.
- The time for construction of this monument was fixed at 42 months. The construction started in the October 2013 and completed this year.
- The total cost of the project was estimated to ₹3,001 crore(US$420 million) by the Government of India.
- The Statue of Unity is an accurate representation of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in his characteristic garments.
- There will be a three-story base comprising of a memorial garden and a large hall. It will be developed as edutainment attraction and focus on the life and achievements of Sardar Patel.

The project was announced in the year 2010. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) was set up for the construction of this statue. The project will be inaugurated at the end of this month.
