Kannur, March 8: Among a series of vandalism attacks on statues of nationalist and Communist figures in the past few days, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi- the father of the nation, was damaged in Kerala on Thursday. The incident took place in Thaliparamba area of Kannur. As per reports, some unknown people damaged the statue of the father of the nation. Earlier in the day, a statue of the Dalit icon Babasaheb Ambedkar was damaged in Meerut’s Mawana Khurd in Uttar Pradesh.
The attack on Mahatma Gandhi's statue come after statues of Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov or Lenin, were vandalised in Tripura’s Belonia town on Tuesday.
The incident took place after the BJP-IPTC alliance won a mandate in the recently concluded 2018 assembly elections in the state. As per reports, supporters of BJP who were celebrating their victory, ending the 25-year rule of the Left Front in the state. Reports state that the supporters chanted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" while the statue was pulled down.
In wake of the recent attacks on statues of prominent personalities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh condemned these incidents and have urged states to take stern action against those accountable.

In a similar incident, a statue of Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was on Wednesday vandalised by unidentified men in south Kolkata. As per reports by PTI, the statue was found partially damaged and its face blackened.
On Tuesday, BJP leader H Raja warned of a Lenin-style takedown of Periyar's statue in Tamil Nadu, miscreants in Vellore reportedly vandalised a statue of the Dravidian ideologue. The Police confirmed the incident late on Tuesday and informed two persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on Periyar’s statue.
