Kishwar sparked controversy through a tweet in which she claimed that the Superintendent of Police who carried out Burhan Wani’s encounter has been suspended. In her tweet, she also took a dig at Director General of Jammu and Kashmir police by calling him the doormat of 'jihadi politicians'.

7. Shocked to learn from @neelakantha that @spvaid --the DG of J&K actually suspended the SP who killed Burhan wani in an encounter--all because @MehboobaMufti was upset at killing of Burhan. A DG playing doormat to jehadi politicians-- Is this what IPS training is all about?

Kishwar in her tweet also claimed that chief minister Mehbooba Mufti was upset over the encounter Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in 2016. Giving a prompt reply to Kishwar’s tweet, the police termed her information as concocted. The police had also asked the author to check her source. The state DG SP Vaid also retweeted Jammu and Kashmir police’s tweet.
In that very tweet, I named the source of my information, namely very responsible & credible person--Sushil Pandit @neelakantha of @RootsInKashmir . I don't think he would give me false information. Let him clarify the position https://t.co/a56lbG79MX

Kishwar refused to budge from her stand. She mentioned Sushil Pandit as the source of her information. Pandit is the owner of Hive Communications India Pvt. Ltd. He has been called out in the past for spreading fake news. According to a report published in Outlook on May 21, 2018, the state police had registered a case at Pampore police station against Pandit for tweeting false information about a militant attack on the CRPF and killing of five personnel at Pampore.
