Solution for Traffic Jams by Mumbai Police: Zaveri-Bazar to Get Odd-Even Style Parking to End Menace
With the implementation of odd-even style parking on Kalbadevi road, some relief is expected says the residents, who are suffering the most due to vehicles being parked disorderly.
Mumbai, June 21: The Mumbai Traffic Department has decided to implement odd-even style parking of vehicles on busy streets and market places like Zaveri Bazar to end traffic menace problems, according to news reports. An affidavit has been filed by the Mumbai traffic department on Wednesday in the Bombay High Court to implement the course of action to resolve vehicle congestion on streets, which usually creates hurdles during emergency situations like fire.
On a pilot project basis, the idea of odd-even style parking will be implemented first at Kalbadevi area of South Mumbai, which is highly congested. If it works, the system will be implemented on other busy streets and marketplaces in Mumbai.
Mumbai's jewellery hub --Zaveri Bazaar is clogged with vehicles as the narrow streets are usually occupied with the hand carts, trolleys and lorries carrying raw materials. The issue has been raised by the residents, however, even after bringing various initiatives in past, it has hardly helped make the area traffic-free.
The traffic department officials said to the court that they observed that a lack of parking space has been creating the menace in the area. The odd-even suggestion has been suggested on an experimental basis, to check whether it decongest the area. Meetings were held with professionals to seek recommendations over the issue earlier.
The Mumbai traffic department filed the affidavit over the Public Interest Litigation by an activist and city resident, Rakesh Shukla, raising concerns over traffic congestion in South Mumbai in specific.
Moreover during the hearing, the court advised to also involve the municipal body and the Mumbai police to make the experiment successful. Also during the next court's hearing, the traffic department has been asked to submit a report on the progress in implementing the above measures. With the implementation of odd-even style parking on Kalbadevi road, some relief is expected say the hassled residents of the area.
