Srinagar, June 25: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the government of Jammu And Kashmir today. In the notice, the commission has asked for report on the murder case of journalist Shujaat Bukhari and his Personal Security Officer (PSO). The commission also raised questions on the security of journalists in the Kashmir Valley. NHRC has also demanded report on the steps taken by the government to ensure the safety of journalists in the state.
Terrorists killed Shujaat Bukhari, the senior editor of Rising Kashmir in Srinagar on June 14. He was shot dead by 3-4 terrorists outside his residence in Lal Chowk. One of Bukhari's PSO was also killed by the terrorists in the attack.
Bukhari played an instrumental role in organising several conferences for peace in the valley. He was also part of the Track II process with Pakistan. Indian intelligence agencies suspected Pakistan’s hand in the killing. The police have arrested of the four suspects in connection with the killing.
On the same day, terrorists also killed an Indian Army jawan from Kashmir, Aurangzeb Khan. He was serving in '44 Rashtriya Rifles' and was part of the encounter in Pulwama in which Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Sameer Tiger was killed.
