Shujaat Bukhari Murder: Jammu & Kashmir Police Identify Killers; 1 Suspected to be From Pakistan

Srinagar, June 27: In what is coming as a breakthrough news in the killing of the Editor Shujaat Bhukari of the Rising Kashmir newspaper, the police is said to have identified the killers who shot the editor in Srinagar. According to media reports, two attackers are Kashmiris whereas one attacker is suspected to be a Pakistani. The editor was shot dead just before EID celebrations in the valley on June 14.

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir seeking a detailed report in Shujaat Bukhari killing on June 25.

Bukhari, a senior journalist and editor of 'Rising Kashmir' was shot dead by terrorists in Srinagar's Press Colony area on June 14.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report seeking swift probe into Bukhari's killing, the Commission asked the state government to provide details of the attacks made on the media persons during last two years.

It also asked the status of relief or rehabilitation provided to the victims and their families.

The NHRC will also inquire about special measures taken by the state government to stop such incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.

It said that the way, Bukhari was killed by the miscreants, indicated that the media persons, even those who have been provided police protection by the State Government, are not safe in the valley.

It further said, "This is a case of violation of Right to Life of the victim and the incident is causing serious threat to free speech and freedom of press in the State." (With Agency Inputs)
