Himachal Pradesh (Shimla), June 19: Popular tourist destination and capital of in Himachal Pradesh, Shimla was facing terrible water crisis for about a month. The problem was so severe that it led to protests and fights among the locals. The tourists were urged to stay away from the place and thus the tourism business went down by 50%. With the strict actions like snapping illegal water supplies, and regulating the supply, the government is now good to declare it as resolved. And hoteliers are now back to wooing customers by giving discounts.
The tourism industry was hit the most and thus is making requests for people to come to visit the beautiful city. Hotel and Restaurant Association of Northern India (HRANI) president Sanjay Sood said to news agency ANI, "Tourism which is the backbone of Shimla had taken a hit due to the water crisis over last month, but things have now become normal. Due to water crisis we lost 50 percent business." He added, "Thanks to government’s intervention, as the crisis is now resolved. We want tourists be informed that there is no water crisis now and they can come here. Since bookings have dropped, at this time we are offering discount." Sood thanked the Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and acting Chief Justice Sanjay Karol for taking measures and making water available to those tourists who had been coming in.
With the situation coming back to normal, hoteliers want the industry to take its pace again. The restaurants, taxi operators too were operated due to the grave water situation. Environmentalists had warned the water crisis in Shimla was a bigger picture of what the entire Himachal Pradesh might face soon. So while the crisis may have been solved now thanks to the urgent action plan, it is important to be careful of the problem looming again in future.
