New Delhi, March 22: Shiromani Akali Dal's Prem Singh Chandumajra on Thursday requested Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan for a holiday on March 23 on account of Shaheed Diwas. As per reports by ANI, Chandumajra has written a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan requesting her to declare a holiday in Parliament on March 23 on shaheedi day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru & Sukhdev.
The trio had earned a death sentence for the failed Ghadar conspiracy of 1915. The SAD leader has also asked to reserve 2 chairs in visitors' gallery where Bhagat Singh & B K Dutt exploded the bomb.
Going back 87 years, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Hari Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged by the British for their alleged involvement in the killing of John Saunders on March 23 in 1931. The day also is known as Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day. The three brave hearts sacrificed their lives for India’s independence, but their inspiring actions continued to stir the desire for freedom until it was achieved in 1947.
Bhagat Singh was moved to fight for India's independence at a tender age of 12, when he visited the Jalianwala Bagh after the mass massacre in 1919. Rajguru was only 22 at the time of his death, while Bhagat Singh was 23 and Sukhdev was 24. As per reports, the trio were hanged at 7:30 PM on March 23, 1931, 11 hours prior to their scheduled execution time while their bodies were sneaked out through a hole in the back wall of the jail.
Every year, 23rd March is observed as Martyrs’ Day in India to honour of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru & Sukhdev. The sacrifice the trio triggered other freedom fighters to relentlessly persuade the movement which finally resulted in Indian Independence.
