The Supreme Court today, has agreed for an open court hearing on Centre's review petition over judgement on SC/ST Act. Reportedly, a special bench is being constituted and Supreme Court will hear the review plea today. As per reports, seeking an urgent hearing, Attorney General KK Venugopal has said that a difficult position has arisen in the country, following the Court's verdict.
The Centre on Monday had formally filed its review petition in the Supreme Court against the apex court's ruling on the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, in which it will seek a review of the recent judgment by which safeguards were put on arrests under the act. The Centre seeked restoration of the SC/ST Act provisions that made certain offences cognisable and non-bailable.
The government moved a review petition on Monday seeking recall of its judgment that ruled that there would be no automatic arrest of an accused following a complaint moved under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
On account of the violent protests by Dalit Groups against the Supreme Court's order, several incidents of arson, firing and vandalism were reported from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab, among other states on Monday. Reportedly, ten people and several were left injured as protestors blocked trains, clashed with police and torched private and public properties, during a nationwide bandh. Schools and colleges except those conducting board examinations will remain shut in parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Agra, Hapur, Ghaziabad and Meerut today.
