Chennai, March 20: Jailed All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader VK Sasikala has been granted 15-day parole to attend her husband Natarajan Maruthappa last rites. The convicted AIADMK leader, who has been lodged in Bengaluru's Parappanna Agrahara Jail in DA case, had applied for the parole after her husband’s death on the wee hours of Tuesday. As per reports, Sasikala is expected to travel to Thanjavur directly by road for the funeral.

Sasikala's husband Maruthappa passed away on Tuesday at around 1.35 am at the Gleneagles Global hospital in Chennai. According to the death certificate, the 75-year-old died due to multiple-organ failure. As per reports by ANI, Shanmuga Priyan, Chief Operation Officer, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, released a statement, saying that every possible attempt was made to sustain his revival. However, despite their best efforts, he was unable to recover.

“It is with profound grief and sorrow that we announce the sad demise of Mr. Natarajan Maruthappa at 1.35 am today (20.3.2018). Every possible clinical attempt was made to sustain his revival. However, despite our best efforts he was unable to recover”, the hospital statement added.

Natarajan’s condition had turned critical on March 18 following severe chest infection. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, Gleneagles Hospital on March 16 and was on put on ventilator support. Earlier this week, the doctors said that 74-year-old chronic liver disease patient visited the hospital two weeks ago after undergoing a surgery in October 2017. "His condition turned critical last night following severe chest congestion," a senior doctor was quoted by TOI.

It must be noted that Sasikala is currently serving a four-year imprisonment and is lodged in central prison in Bengaluru in a disproportionate assets case.
