Year after year, the Republic Day and the Independence Day celebrations leave behind a trail of damaged or semi-disposed national flags laying down on the roads. As per the Flag Code of India, 2002, the disposing of flags on pedestrian pathways or roads, or bringing disrepute to them in any other manner is an offence.
How to Dispose the National Flag in Accordance With the Law
If the flag needs to be disposed, there are two methods as per the law: burning or burying them.
While burning the flag, the disposer needs to ensure that a safe and clean place is chosen for the disposal. The flag needs to be folded and placed in the centre of the flame. In case, the flag is not folded while being burnt, it would considered as an offence.
In case the flag is being buried, the disposer needs to ensure that all damaged flags are collected together, folded and kept into a wooden box. The box then needs to be buried at a suitable depth beneath the surface. After burying the box, the disposer needs to maintain a moment of silence as a mark of respect.
