Ramzan Ceasefire in Jammu And Kashmir Not to be Extended, Says Report; Centre Discusses Amarnath Yatra Security Concerns
The Centre has decided not to extend the Ramzan ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir.
New Delhi, June 14: The Centre has decided not to extend the Ramzan ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir. The decision has been taken in a security meeting held at Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence, reported CNN News18 citing sources. However, The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance partner in Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expresses disappoint over the decision.
Security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra that will commence from June 28 have also been discussed. The main reason for not extending the ceasefire is because of the security concerns during the yatra. According the report, the government also does not want to tie army's hand in curbing terrorism in the valley.
The Centre had suspended all military operations in the Kashmir Valley during the holy month of Ramzan as a goodwill gesture, but the terror attacks increased during this period. Snatching of weapons from security forces and grenade attacks are on the rise during the month of Ramzan. On Thursday morning terrorists opened fire at a joint checkpoint of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police near Pulwama's Gangoo area in Jammu and Kashmir.
