Panchkula, February 21: Honeypreet Insaan, the ‘adopted’ daughter of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and her accomplice Sukhdeep Kaur were brought to Panchkula District Court on Wednesday to appear in connection with Panchkula violence case. Honeypreet has been identified as one of the masterminds behind the violence at Panchkula on August 25, in which 36 people lost their lives.
In 2017, violence had erupted in Haryana after Dera Sacha Sauda followers went on a rampage following the conviction of their Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in a rape case. To recall, the 50-year-old Dera chief- Ram Raheem who is lodged in the Sunaria Jail in Rohtak, had been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by the CBI court for the 2002 rapes of two of his disciples.
Honeypreet, along with Sukhdeep Kaur, was arrested from Zirakpur-Patiala road in Punjab on October 3. As per reports, Honeypreet tops the list of 43 persons ‘wanted’ by the Haryana Police in connection with incidents of violence that followed Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s conviction in a rape case. Earlier, a lookout notice was issued against Honeypreet Insan and Dera spokesman Aditya Insan, whose name also figures in the ‘wanted’ list.
The Haryana police had requested the general public and media to send videos or photographs of the violence that rocked Panchkula on August 25th. To recall, the Dera supporters had turned violent immediately after Gurmeet was convicted by a CBI court of raping two of his sadhvis. During the protest, the Police had fired at the rioters to quell the violence, leading to the deaths.
Earlier this week, the Haryana's Panchkula Court dropped 'attempt to murder' and 'sedition' charges against 53 Dera Sacha Sauda followers in the Panchkula violence case. The court said that the police had failed to submit incriminating evidences, including CCTV footage to fortify the allegations. According to media reports, Panchkula Dera in-charge Chamkaur Singh and media coordinator Surinder Dhiman Insan, are among the accused.
