Pune, May 3: The National Commission for Women (NCW) after an inspection on Thursday, May 3, has said that the Pune's Yerawada Central Prison holds more than double the inmates it can accommodate. After the inspection, the women body said that the jail has 282 inmates whereas the total capacity of the jail is 126 inmates only, reported news agency IANS.
NCW member Alok Rawat was quoted saying that out of the total number of inmates in the jail, 164 were convicted inmates and 118 are undertrials. There is also a foreign inmate and 10 children who are staying with their mothers in the jail added Alok Rawat after the inspection.
The purpose of the inspection was to assess and look into the various aspects affecting the inmates and women inmates in particular such as overcrowding, legal help, skill development, training and legal awareness among the inmates. The inspection also looked into the facilities available for the children of the inmates.
An NCW statement said that "The jail authorities are striving to involve NGOs in their efforts to improve the living conditions of inmates, as also to provide them skills aimed at their rehabilitation, going beyond the traditional embroidery skill training and introducing new training like repairing of home appliances."
However, there have also been some positives that have come out of the report such as improvement of basic amenities to inmates such as renovation of space and better hygienic facilities.
