Prime Minister Narendra Modi Faces Criticism From Indian Medical Bodies Over His Remark Made in UK on Indian Doctors
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), Mumbai have expressed displeasure over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement in London.
New Delhi, April 22: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), Mumbai have expressed displeasure over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement in London. During his interaction with Indian Diaspora, in a talk show ‘Bharat ki Baat’, he had highlighted alleged malpractices between doctors and pharmaceutical firms and said that doctors attend conferences abroad to promote these companies.
Association of Medical Consultants and Indian Medical Association write to PM Modi expressing disappointment over his remarks in London. In a letter written by AMC, It said, “We are deeply pained by your talk at Westminister in UK. Your talk should have highlighted good in India and not the bad.” AMC also demanded strict price control on pharmacuitical industry. AMC also slammed government for lower budget allocation to health sector. In a letter AMC said, “Due to lack of government healthcare, people rely on private healthcare.”
Dr Ravi Wankhedkar, National President of Indian Medical Association said, “We are all saddened by PM Modi's remarks on Indian doctors, that also in a country(UK) where medical system is run by 70% Indians. Issues like medicine prices are in hands of Govt not us. We humbly request PM to reconsider his remark.” In a press statement, IMA secretary-general Dr RN Tandon commenting on PM Modi’s remark said that the health system of the country would collapse without Indian doctors and added that the statement made by the Prime Minister is not accepted
Dr Vinod Sharma, Indian Medical Association termed the comment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as shameful. He said, “Shameful statement by PM. In conferences we get to know new procedures and medicines. Also, the conferences abroad are never sponsored by pharma firms.”
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also slammed Prime Minister over his remarks which he made in London. Tharoor tweeted, “Our PM must stop denigrating fellow Indians when he is abroad, whether these are former Prime Ministers or current doctors!”
