Pre-Monsoon Showers Leave Udupi City of Mangalore Flooded, As Monsoon Reaches Kerala

Mangalore, May 29: As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon has set in in  Kerala and drizzles are expected in the region at any time in 24 hours. But the nearby southern region of Karnataka in Udupi near Mangalore experienced heavy downpours on Tuesday. According to IMD, the downpours were not monsoon showers but pre-monsoon spells. As per a news report in The Times of India, the IMD would observe the weather for two-three days in Karnataka and then declare the monsoon prediction.

Torrential rains hit the city and many low-lying areas were submerged under water. The report stated that the rain started at 9 am in the morning and slowly increased by mid-afternoon. Many places experienced the artificial flood-like situation as water entered the building compounds situated in low-lying areas, eventually making it difficult for residents to come out. Major places that saw heavy downpours and were severely affected are Kodialguthu, Kottara Chowki, PVS, Kadri Kambala, Panjimogeru, Adyar, Yekkuru and other.

Shivaganga Milk parlour owner Shivaram, whose shop is located beside the Kodialguthu stormwater drain, was quoted as saying that it is the first time in last 25 years his shop is getting drenched. He said, "I have not seen this kind of downpour in about three decades," as quoted by The Times of India. While many shared the rain pictures on  Twitter raising concern over the heavy downpours and also slammed the authority and local representatives for having no preventive measures to tackle such situation.

 

Due to heavy showers, the electricity was cut as a preventive measure. The vehicles parked on the roadside were found floating due to water accumulated at various places. In addition, several trees were reported to be uprooted as the gusty wind lashed the region, causing widespread damage. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported till now.
