Mumbai, June 12: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to impose fine to the tune of Rs 10,000 on those who continue to use plastic bags and other banned items made of plastic from June 23. For the execution of the task, the civic body has appointed 72 inspectors across Mumbai. These inspectors have been given the responsibility to impose the fine on shops and establishments violating norms. Nidhi Choudhari, the deputy municipal commissioner and conveyor of information related to plastic usage, on her Twitter account, shared the link of a list of names of inspectors.

The range of fine will begin from Rs. 5,000 and will extend to Rs. 10,000 and more for repeated offenders. Also, to make the ban successful, the task has been divided between three departments. The small units such as shops and establishment will be checked by civic officials. Similarly, the civic market department officials will keep a watch on BMC markets, while the licence department officials will impose fine on hawkers and vendors for using plastic.

The Maharashtra state government in April implemented a blanket ban on the use of plastic bags and other cutlery items. The ban exempted pouches usually used for milk packing, curd, ghee, oil and medical utilities. Following the demand of Yuva Sena Chief Aditya Thackeray, the State Environment Minister and Sena leader Ramdas Kadam declared the ban on a festive day 'Gudi-Padwa.'
