New Delhi/Mumbai, May 23: FuelĀ ratesĀ were hiked for a 10th consecutive day in a row on Wednesday, taking the costs of petrol and diesel to a record-high. The worst brunt of the hike will be felt in Mumbai, whereĀ oneĀ litre of petrol will cost Rs 84.99. In Delhi, the motorists using diesel cars will have to shell-out Rs 68.08 per litre.

The latest hike comes despite the brent crude oil falling byĀ 50 cents to $78.84. The domestic fuel prices rose to an unprecedented level after the international crude oil rocketed to $84.40 on May 14.

Although the crude oil has devalued significantly over the past eight days, oil corporations in India have continued to increment the prices. Analysts claim this is the result of the status quo maintained by the state-owned oil companies for nearly 15 days ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. Since the rates were not altered during the period, a loss of nearly Rs 500 crore is reported to be borne by the oil PSUs.
