New Delhi, July 29: The Northern Railways will temporarily close down passenger reservation system or PRS tonight. As per the statement issued by the Northern Railway PRO, the ticket booking services will be deactivated on the intervening night of July 29-30.

The three-hour time-period during which the PRS will remain inactive begins at 11:45 pm on Sunday and concludes at 02:45 am on Monday. Along with PRS services, enquiry on 139 and internet booking will also be clamped down.

"Due to static and dynamic database compression activity in the passenger reservation system, the services would be temporarily suspended from 11:45 pm to 02:45 am on the intervening night of July 29-July 30," said the statement issued by the Northern Railways.

The last such maintenance activity was undertaken on May 2-3, when the passenger reservation system was clamped down by the Northern Railways between 10:45 pm to 5 am for "system upgradation" purpose.

Indian Railways, which ferried nearly 2.5 crore passengers on daily basis, witnesses a large chunk of bookings online. A report last year said nearly 10 lakh commuters used the PRS to book tickets per day. The e-booking service completed 30 years in 2017. The concept was first introduced and implemented by the then Railways Minister Madhav Rao Scindia.
