Mumbai, Jan 26: The first-day box office collection numbers were impressive for Padmaavat as the film succeeded in collecting Rs 18 crores from the domestic market, despite the screenings being marred with protests.

The movie also made dents in the overseas market. In the UK, Australia and New Zealand, the Day 1 ended on a promising note for the Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone starrer.

The film drew a collection of 3,67,984 Australian Dollars, which roughly amounts to Rs 1.88 crore. It drew NZ$ 64,265 (approximately Rs 29.99 lakhs in the neighbouring New Zealand, and £ 97,604 (Rs 88.08 lakhs) in the UK.

Earlier, reports said nearly 50-60 per cent seats were occupied at Indian theatres where the movie was screened.

Meanwhile, the preview screenings of the movie on Wednesday drew Rs 5 crores.

The film had entered into the controversy after the Rajput group Karni Sena raised apprehensions, claiming "distortion of history" by the movie makers and defamation of Padmavati, the 13th century figure who is considered as a deity by the Rajput community.

Four states - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh - had banned the film citing the threat to law and order posed by the Karni Sena. However, the Supreme Court nullified the ban after the Padmaavat makers filed a plea challenging it.
