Mumbai, March 29: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Haryana have asked all the slaughterhouses in the state to remain closed on the account of Mahavir Jayanti 2018. The order was passed by Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain. Meat and egg lovers in the state of Haryana will have to curb their appetite for non-vegetarian food today, given the order passed by their government.
In another surprising decision by the government of Haryana, the minister has directed the closure of all slaughterhouses in the state on Thursday. Also, there were reports of the sale of meats and eggs being restricted too.
In her statement, Kavita Jain said that the festival of Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated as non-violence day every year. Jain further said representatives of different religious organisations had requested her to prohibit the killings of animals on the day of Mahavir Jayanti.
The Minister had then directed the officers of the department to prepare a proposal for the same concern. She added, “The decision is taken keeping in view the religious sentiments of the Jain community. The decision to close slaughterhouses on March 29 on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti has been approved. Also, the proposal to restrict the sale of meat, fish and eggs was approved too.”
The concerned authorities have asked to ensure the implementation of the orders. Also, they will have to submit reports regarding the same.
Last year, the state of Haryana observed the festive day of Mahavir Jayanti as ‘Ahimsa Diwas’. Then, the government had completely banned the sales of meat, eggs, and liquor.
The day of Mahavir Jayanti is also listed as one of the dry days of the year. There has been a lot of instances in the past where state governments across India have passed such similar orders. States of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan have also cleared such proposals, much to the dismay of the public.
