Mumbai, June 27: Often, airports and roads are considered as parameters of development and land is acquired for the same by providing compensation to the locals whose land is used and taken up for the projects. But rarely does anyone try and understand the plight of locals and those living nearby, who suffer the most due to the construction of infrastructure facilities. CIDCO's land leveling activity in Navi Mumbai, for constructing the Navi Mumbai Airport, is one such project which is unintentionally harming those living in the vicinity and nearby villages by causing flooding and water accumulation, alleged the villagers.

According to a report in The Indian Express, residents of villages near where the land is getting leveled for the Navi Mumbai Airport, are facing flooding issues due to the project work, complained the resident of Dungi and Pargaon villages. The reports also mentions that the houses of these villagers are within the distance of 100 metres from where the work is under-progress.

The locals have also complained about snakes and dangerous insects being found into their houses since the airport development work. This, the villagers claim, is due to the stormwater.

The Indian Express quoted a senior CIDCO official saying that they have provided pipes in the villages so that excess water can be drained out but has said that there is a possibility of 'some' flooding taking place initially. He said that the culverts have been opened and adequate steps have been taken so that smooth drainage of water takes place. But he added that because the area is low-lying, water accumulation may take place.
