New Delhi, February 25: The National War Memorial near India Gate in New Delhi is being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25. The iconic memorial honours the jawans who have laid down their lives for the sake of the country since Independence. The National War Memorial represents the culmination of the collective aspiration of a grateful nation to pay a fitting tribute to the martyrs.
The memorial draws inspiration from the 'Chakravyuh' formation and is spread on an area spanning over 40 acres at the India Gate complex. It is believed to be very iconic as it will serve as a new landmark, which would attract people from near and far. Here’s all you need to know about the National War Memorial:
- The National War Memorial will include a wall that will carry the names of those soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Reports inform that the project was executed at a cost of approximately Rs 176 crore.
- The National War Memorial, near India Gate in New Delhi, is a fitting tribute to Army jawans who laid down their lives defending the nation, post-independence.
- The names of 25,942 war casualties have been inscribed on 16 walls at the NMemorial, which consists of four concentric circles extending outward: the Amar Chakra(circle of immortality), Veerta Chakra (circle of bravery), Tyag Chakra (circle of sacrifice) and Rakshak Chakra (circle of protection).
- The National War Memorial honours the memory of Indian soldiers who died in all wars starting from the 1948 war with Pakistan to the Kargil conflict of 1999 and also those who lost their lives in UN peacekeeping missions, humanitarian operations and counter-insurgency deployments.
- The National War Memorial complex includes a central obelisk, an eternal flame, and six bronze murals depicting famous battles fought by Indian Army, Air Force and Navy.
- The busts of the 21 awardees of Param Veer Chakra have been installed at Param Yoddha Sthal which includes three living awardees Sub Maj (Hony Capt) Bana Singh (Retd), Sub Major Yogendra Singh Yadav and Sub Sanjay Kumar.

The war memorial and a museum with a deep sense of gratitude will honour those brave soldiers, who laid down their lives. The government in 2015 had approved the project for building a National War Memorial and a National War Museum near India Gate in memory of over 22,500 soldiers who laid down their lives post-Independence.
