Chandigarh, May 6: Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar stirred another controversy on Sunday. In the wake of alleged disruptions to namaz by right-wing groups at ten places in Gurugram on Friday, Khattar said that namaz should “ideally” be offered in mosques or at one’s home.

While addressing a press conference in Chandigarh before leaving for a ten-day visit to Israel and the United Kingdom, The Haryana chief minister said, “There has been an increase in the occurrence of namaz being offered at public places. It is fine till no one objects. But ideally namaz should be offered in the precincts of a religious place or at one’s home,” reported Hindustan Times. Hindu groups have warned the government that they would continue their protest if “unauthorised” prayers in public places is not stopped. Khattar said that the government was monitoring the situation closely and also assured to maintain law and order in the state.

The disruptions were caused allegedly by members of a group called ‘Hindu Sanyukt Sangarsh’. The members of the group staged protests on Friday as they claimed that Muslim worshippers did not have permission to offer prayers in public. Security forces were deployed in the area to avoid any unwanted incident. Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shiv Sena, Hindu Jagran Manch and Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Kranti Dal are part of the Samiti comprises 12 Hindu groups.
