Kohima, May 30: A man was beaten up by a mob in Mon district of Nagaland on Wednesday for allegedly raping a minor girl. The accused Rahul Sen was also paraded naked before rescued by the police.

Sen, a salesman in a watch shop, had sexually assaulted a 12-year-old Naga girl on several occasions in a village. The village is about 360 km northeast of the capital Kohima. According to a report published in Hindustan Times, the matter came to light recently when the victim complained of ill health and was taken to a hospital. During a medical check-up, it was confirmed that she was raped.

Local residents nabbed the accused and beaten him up. The accused was paraded naked and then tied to an advertisement board. The police reached the spot and rescued Sen from the mob before taking him into custody.

In a similar type of incident in March 2015, a mob broke into the Dimapur central jail and thrashed a rape accused. The police arrested more than 40 persons and the curfew was also imposed in the area.

In April this year, the union cabinet has approved an ordinance allowing courts to pronounce the death penalty for those convicted of raping children below the age of 12. In case of rape of a girl under 16 years, minimum punishment has increased from 10 years to 20 years which can be extendable to life imprisonment.
