Mumbai, June 5: Rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning lashed several parts of Mumbai, leading to havoc in the city. Due to heavy rainfall, water-logging, power cuts and road traffic were reported at various places. Train services were also hit and were running 15-20 minutes late after the city received pre-monsoon showers. So far, BMC received 39 tree fall complaints.
In its statement, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Disaster Control Room on Monday said that maximum rainfall of 46 mm was recorded in Andheri area followed by Dahisar (43mm), Dharavi (39 mm), Wadala (35mm) and Byculla (33mm). The BMC informed that 39 cases of tree falling were also reported and traffic snarls were observed in Dharavi and Dadar TT circle.
According to a report by TOI, a man was injured after part of a tree crashed on him at Marve Road in Malad (W). The report informs that BMC disaster management officials said the victim, Markandey Singh (35), is in the ICU at a private hospital and is still unconscious.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday has informed that monsoon is likely to reach Maharashtra and Goa this week. Rains over the western coast, especially in Mumbai, are likely to peak between 8 June and 10 June, private agency Skymet said.
As per details by a Disaster Control Room official, there was no report of any untoward incident due to the rains. Due to pre-monsoon showers in Mumbai, flight operations were affected at the Mumbai Airport and 18 flights of various airlines were diverted, an airport spokesperson said.
Monsoon made an onset in Kerala on May 29, three days before its scheduled arrival. It has advanced in some parts of Tamil Nadu, and southwest, west-central, east-central, northeast of Bay of Bengal, and in most of the northeastern states, the IMD said.
