Mumbai Rains: IMD Says No Heavy Rainfall Till Thursday

The IMD has said that the city may see a couple of spells of rainfall and thunder showers in the coming two days but nothing substantial.

Mumbai, June 12: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Mumbai will not see heavy spell of rainfall in the next two days that is, till Thursday. The city did not see much of rainfall on Monday after the heavy showers on Saturday. The IMD had earlier issued a warning that Mumbai would see heavy downpour from June 9 to June 11. However, the IMD has said that the city may see a couple of spells of rainfall and thunder showers in the coming two days but nothing substantial.

The IMD observatory in Colaba and Santacruz recorded little rainfall on Monday. The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had cancelled the weekend holidays of its staff anticipating heavy rainfall. It did rain heavily on Saturday but Sunday and Monday have been dry with very little rainfall.

On June 6, The BMC had cancelled the weekend holidays of its workers and officials after India Meterological Department (IMD) issued warning on Wednesday of heavy to very heavy rains in the coming four days. The IMD in a press release had issued the warning that the Maharashtra coast will receive heavy rainfall till June 11. Skymet Weather on Tuesday had warned Mumbai of worst rain spell since 26 July 2005 downpour.

On June 9, heavy showers lashed the island city of Mumbai marking the official beginning of monsoon on Saturday. Many low-lying areas were poorly affected, as they were found flooded with rainwater. Netizens on social media platform ---Twitter shared pictures of areas where they witnessed water-logging problems and also slammed the Mumbai civic body for their failure to resolve the issue despite having colossal budget provision.

Mumbai streets were water-logged on Saturday after heavy rain lashed the city with about 96 mm of it received within 12 hours alone. The heavy rainfall in several parts of the city caused havoc and disrupted normal life. It also claimed the life a 13-year old girl named Drushti Mukesh Mungra, who died due to tree fall in Dahisar. A 66-year old fisherman identified as Steni Admani was struck by lightning and died on the spot on Saturday.
