Mumbai, June 6: The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cancelled the weekend holidays of its workers and officials after India Meterological Department (IMD) issued warning on Wednesday of heavy to very heavy rains in the coming four days. The IMD in a press release issued earlier in the day had said that the Maharashtra coast will receive heavy rainfall till June 11. Skymet Weather on Tuesday had warned Mumbai of worst rain spell since 26 July 2005 downpour.
The IMD in its release added that intense rainfall activity is expected over Maharashtra Coast starting from 7 June, 2018. The report makes it clear that widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy spells are likely to begin over South Konkan and Goa from tomorrow onwards.
The rainfall is expected to be accompanied with gusty winds and at many places thundershowers will also strike. Raigad district will see the maximum thundershowers and Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri district will see heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Mumbai traffic was brought to a standstill at certain places after Monday's heavy downpour. There were reports of waterlogging and even electric cuts from parts of the city. The BMC has said that it is well equipped to face the rain challenge this monsoon but if the Monday rains are anything to go by, the coming days could prove tough for the Mumbaikars, especially if the IMD report comes true.
