Mumbai Metro 3 Completes First Underground Tunnel Project, Devendra Fadnavis Calls It 'Breakthrough'
A tunnel boring machine (TBM) of the Mumbai Metro 3 project achieved a feat by completing a section of tunnelling on Monday.
Mumbai, Sep 25: A tunnel boring machine (TBM) of the Mumbai Metro 3 project achieved a feat by completing a section of tunnelling on Monday. The TBM, named Wainganga 1, bored a 1.26-kilometre long tunnel from the launch shaft in Marol Naka to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 2 station, which is under construction.
Wainganga 1 bored 4.6 m daily and has shaped the tunnel with 901 RCC cement rings. The TBM is part of Mumbai Metro project's Package 7, which connects SEEPZ station to CSMIA Terminal 2 station. Larsen & Toubro and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company are undertaking the Package 7. The TBM had been commissioned on January 8. “For any success, we say, ‘it’s a breakthrough’. For the first time, I could see the definition of the word ‘breakthrough’," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said reacting to the success achieved by the Mumbai Metro 3. He said the underground metro line would create a within the city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, reported The Hindu. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has so far completed 9 kilometres tunnelling across the entire Colaba to SEEPZ corridor with the help of 14 of 17 TBMs. The first work of tunnelling started in November last year at Naya Nagar in Mahim. Three more TBMs will be commissioned next month.
