Mumbai, June 6: In what is believed to be a milestone, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) which is the second busiest in the country witnessed record flight movements on Tuesday. There was flight movement of 1003 aircraft, making it the highest traffic in a single day at any airport in India till date.

The capacity of the Mumbai airport is to handle 40 million passengers, but since 2016 it has been handling more than the estimated number. The airport is believed to handle more than 40 flights in one hour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February this year laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the Rs 16,700-crore Navi Mumbai international airport. The airport is aimed at giving a breather to the single-runway at Mumbai airport.

It must be noted that unlike the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport of Mumbai which is a single-runway affair, the new airport in neighbouring Navi Mumbai will have two parallel runways, and will handle close to 80 flights an hour.

According to reports, the Mumbai Airport has appointed a Spanish consultant to check the feasibility of installing noise barriers at the airport premises. As the airport is bustling one, it leads to noise being generated continually due to the landing and taking off of flights. Hence, to monitor the noise, the airport has around five monitoring stations, including mobile ones.
