New Delhi, March 30: Daily use items are set to get costlier in the new fiscal year that starts from April 1, 2018. From the first day of April, the proposals that were introduced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget speech would be implemented across the nation. The increase in the rates of essential items is certainly believed to burn a hole in the common man’s pocket.

Though Jaitley did not announce any major changes in the price of commodities and services, changes in excise and customs duties on certain daily use items are set to see a surge in price after April 1.

As the Union Budget 2018-19 hiked customs duties on some products, a large number of imported items including mobile handsets, deodorants, watches, cars and motorcycles, fruit juices, perfumes and footwear will become costlier.

However, select items such as imported raw cashew nuts, solar tempered glass and raw materials and accessories of cochlear implants will become cheaper with the government reducing import duties on these items.

List of items that would become costlier starting from April 1, 2018:

  1. Cars and motorcycles
  2. Mobile phones
  3. Silver
  4. Gold
  5. Vegetable, fruit juices, including orange and cranberry
  6. Sunglasses
  7. Miscellaneous food preparations other than soya protein
  8. Perfumes and toilet waters
  9. Sunscreen, suntan, manicure, pedicure preparations
  10. Preparations for oral dental hygiene, denture fixative pastes and powders; dental floss
  11. Pre-shave, shaving or after-shave preparations,
  12. Deodorants, bath preparations, depilatories, perfumery
  13. Scent sprays and similar toilet sprays
  14. Truck and Bus radial tyres
  15. Silk Fabrics
  16. Footwear
  17. Coloured gemstones
  18. Diamonds
  19. Imitation jewellery
  20. Smart watches/wearable devices
  21. LCD/ LED TV panels
  22. Furniture
  23. Mattresses
  24. Lamps
  25. Wrist watches, pocket watches, clocks
  26. Tricycles, scooters, pedal cars, wheeled toys, dolls’ carriages, dolls, toys, puzzles of all kinds
  27. Video game consoles
  28. Articles and equipment for sports or outdoor games, swimming pools and paddling pools
  29. Cigarette and other lighters, candles
  30. Kites
  31. Edible/vegetable oils such as olive oil, groundnut oil

List of items that will become cheaper

  1. Raw cashew nuts
  2. Solar tempered glass or solar tempered glass used for manufacture solar panels/modules
  3. Raw materials, parts or accessories used in making cochlear implants
  4. Select capital goods and electronics such as ball screws and linear motion guide

The Union Budget 2018-19 is guided by mission to strengthen agriculture, rural development, health, education, employment, MSME and infrastructure sectors. The government says, a series of structural reforms will propel India among the fastest growing economies of the world. The nation is firmly on course to achieve over 8 % growth as manufacturing, services and exports back on good growth path.
