Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been making continuous efforts to formulate and administer rules and regulations related to road transport. In a bid to make Indian roads safer, the Road Transport and Highway Ministry have issued a new notification wherein storage, manufacture and sale of non-ISI helmets in India will be illegal. Also, the two-wheeler Helmet manufacturers association is in high spirit with the decision of the Apex body which is believed to put an end to the circulation of non-ISI helmets.
According to the recent notification from the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, this will come into effect from the next 60 days. Moreover, all the manufacturers, dealers and sellers if found guilty will face an immediate arrest without warrant. For the first time offenders, the penalty would be two years in jail or Rs. 2 lakh fine and subsequent offences would attract a higher punishment or fine. Commenting on this development, Mr. Rajeev Kapur, President, Two Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association and MD of Asia’s largest Helmet manufacturer, Steelbird said “The government highly appreciates this move and this decision would act as a masterstroke and help in doing away with sale, manufacture, storage and use of NON-ISI marked helmets.”
Mr Kapur further mentioned that Now I am glad that consumers will be buying genuine products. The new two-wheeler helmets under the mandatory certification regime will be lighter and airier for the comfort of bike riders. Once again as a part of this industry, I would really like to thank the government for such an applaudable move.”
He further continued by stating, "The international brands exporting helmets to India in accordance to European and US standard will also need to adhere to ISI standards failing which they will not be able to sell in the country. As this new notification comes into effect in next 60 days, all the manufacturers not adhering to ISI standards should stop manufacturing immediately, and the dealers should liquidate the stocks quickly."
As per the Motor Vehicle Act, every two-wheeler rider must use ISI marked helmets only and the users who have already purchased the helmet should stop using the fake helmets. As the access to sub-standard product coming to an end, the injuries due to road accidents are expected to decrease, which will directly save a lot of money for the government that is employed on things like police, medical expenditure, insurance, hospitals & much more.
