Mumbai, Jun 26: A 35-year-old man, who was declared "murdered by his in-laws" in Uttar Pradesh in 2016, was found living in Bhiwandi by the crime branch of Mumbai police on Sunday. The Uttar Pradesh police are likely to arrive in Mumbai today to take the accused man into custody.
Pannelal Yadav, who hails from Maharganj in Uttar Pradesh, was jailed after his in- laws had lodged a dowry case against him. To teach them a lesson, Yadav, along with his relatives, had hatched a conspiracy to get his in-laws in trouble by lodging a fake case for having "murdered" him.
"After his release, he and a few close relatives hatched a plot that he would visit his brother-in-law's house in Maharganj and then go missing. Yadav switched off his cellphone while still in Uttar Pradesh and slipped away to Mumbai. This was in October 2016," Police inspector Sanjay Salunke told a newspaper.
After Yadav's planned disappearance, his relatives approached the police and accused his in-laws of murdering him. When the local police refused to register a complaint, Yadav's relatives approached a local court which directed the police to register a murder case against four of Yadav's in-laws.
However, the Mumbai crime branch had got information more than a month ago that Yadav was living in Mira Road. "Our team learnt that Yadav was present somewhere in Bhiwandi, Mira Road or Bhayander. On Sunday, we found this Mira Road resident staying in Bhiwandi," deputy commissioner of police (crime) Nisar Tamboli was quoted as saying.
