Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue Damaged in Kannur: One Man Arrested, Police Denies Political Relation
A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was damaged in Thaliparamba area of Kannur in Kerala on Wednesday morning. An unidentified person has broken the glasses and garland on the statue.
Kannur, March 8: One person has been arrested for damaging a Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Taliparamba in Kannur. As per details by Kerala Police, the man who was arrested for damaging the statue is in a mentally unstable condition. “He is mentally unstable & we are ruling out any political relation”, the Police said.
Earlier on Wednesday, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was damaged in Thaliparamba area of Kannur in Kerala. An unidentified person has broken the glasses and garland on the statue. In a similar incident, a statue of the Dalit icon Babasaheb Ambedkar was damaged in Meerut’s Mawana Khurd in Uttar Pradesh.
As per details by Police, the man was wearing a brown shirt and saffron coloured lungi, which is commonly worn in Kannur and other parts of Kerala. The vandalising statues of nationalist and Communist figures began on Monday when the statue of Lenin was damaged in Tripura after the BJP swept the assembly elections in the state. In the last three days, statues of Periyar and Syama Prasad Mookerjee were vandalised in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal respectively.
