Mumbai, March 28: The Supreme Court, earlier today, has rejected a petition, seeking an inquiry into Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. The Apex Court said that there was no merit in the plea asking to reopen the Gandhi’s assassination case. The Court said that the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting to probe the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi is not maintainable and hence the case won’t be reopened.

The following PIL was filed an IT professional, Dr Pankaj Kumudchandra Phadnis in October last year. Dr Phadnis had sought a re-investigation in the murder case and had asked for a thorough probe.

In his petition, Dr Phadnis said, “Gandhi's death should be probed, as there was still a complete myth about the fourth bullet being fired by the convict. The matter should be re-investigated and should have a thorough probe."

The SC had sought assistance from former Additional Solicitor General Amarendra Sharan as amicus curiae in the case, earlier. There were reports that Dr Phadnis’ petition was dismissed by High Court earlier.

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, in broad daylight. Nathuram Godse had fired three bullets at Gandhi’s chest while he was on his way to address a prayer meeting. Fondly known as ‘Father of the Nation’, Gandhi succumbed to injuries and died on the spot.
