Thane, May 28: Three transgenders were beaten up in Thane, allegedly by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers on Sunday. All the victims were taken to Thane civil hospital. The one who has received severe injuries has been shifted to another hospital.

The MNS workers accused transgenders of involving in prostitution. Around 20 people got together on Sunday near Majiwada bridge in Thane where the three victims usually operate. V Darekar, a senior police inspector from Kapurbawdi police station told Hindustan Times, the trio was only standing and begging on the side of the road and were not involved in prostitution. Darekar further said that they were not regulars at the spot.

A case has been registered the MNS’ Thane president Avinash Jadhav and 20 other party workers, including six women, told the senior police inspector. Jadhav has been summoned by the police to record his statement. The Times of India quoted Jadhav as saying, “ We got many complaints about prostitution at this spot. I had written to the police, but no action was taken."

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, the police have registered a case of assault and rioting under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. A video of the incident went viral on social media.
