Mumbai, June 20: Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Satish Mathur is set to retire on June 30. With his retirement, there will be a vacancy for the position of the highest police cadre in the state. Speculations are rife about who will be appointed the next DGP. The first name which tops the list of the prominent probables is of Mumbai Commissioner of Police(CP) Dattatray "Datta" Padsalgikar.
The 1982 cadre IPS officer is one of the top contenders for the role. Reportedly, Padsalgikar is to complete his three-year tenure as CP of Mumbai in August 2018. Therefore he may be promoted to the DGP post. However, there is also a buzz that he may be given three months of extension to remain the CP of Mumbai, which will eventually take his name out from the race.
Other strong contenders for the spot are SP Yadav of 1986 batch and Subhod Jaiswal of 1985 batch. There are possibilities that Yadav may not be considered for the post despite his seniority due to the conflicts between him and the state. Jaiwal who is serving in the Union cabinet secretariat is also not keen to return to state. Also, reports say that he has not responded to the state's offer as yet.
Furthermore, if the state designates Padsalgikar, current Mumbai CP for DGP post, then IPS Parmabhir Singh, currently Thane CP or Sanjay Bharve (VCMD, Maharashtra State Security Corporation) will be the contenders for the Mumbai CP role.
Meanwhile, speculations are also making the rounds that Maharashtra, like Gujarat, may keep the DGP post vacant. The Gujarat government from last one and half year has not filed in the DGP post.
